For the Birds

Grasshopper visited Spruce Hill Bird Sanctuary
This summer, a family at PIC wants to help the Spruce Hill Bird Sanctuary, a wonderful community resource that is open to the public and has been visited by children from PIC.

Hannah Bush, now in PIC's After School program visited the Bird Sanctuary when she was a Grasshopper. While there she and her friends filled the feeders, searched for worms, and waited for some hungry birds to come and eat. They were not disappointed!

Now, along with her sister Phoebe, also a PIC After Schooler, and their Mom (and PIC Board member) Julie Bush, Hannah helped create a milkshake that Ben & Jerry's on 40th Street will sell for two weeks in June. One dollar from every shake will go to the Bird Sanctuary.

According to Julie, she and the girls went to Ben & Jerry's and helped create the milkshake inspired by what birds like to eat.

"The oreos on the bottom look like soil. The vanilla/strawberry blend tasted the best and represents the berries that birds eat, the chocolate sprinkles represent ants, and birds like nuts. Since not all humans eat nuts, they are on top and optional!"

If you need a sweet treat to cool off this month, the "For the Birds" milkshake will be offered from June 14 to June 28.

If you are looking for a treat for the senses, head to the Spruce Hill Bird Sanctuary, located just a few blocks from PIC. Read more about this public nature space on the Spruce Hill Community Association website.
